Three Nominated For Kalangala Woman MP By-election

The Electoral Commission (EC) nominated three candidates on the first day of nominations for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.

The candidates are vying to fill a seat left vacant following the death of former Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli.

Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi told URN that the exercise proceeded smoothly.

The three are  Aidah Nabayiga from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Irene Nampala from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and Flavia Nagawa, an Independent.

Nominations are scheduled to conclude Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Kalangala District headquarters.

“The commission successfully nominated three candidates on the first day. Nominations continue and conclude today at 5:000 p.m., after which the commission will announce the total number of successfully nominated candidates and proceed to harmonize campaign programmes with them and their agents,” Mucunguzi said.

He urged all remaining aspirants to comply with nomination requirements and electoral laws to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

“The Electoral Commission appeals to all those seeking nomination to follow the commission’s guidelines, complete their nomination forms accurately, and ensure all legal requirements are met,” he added.

When nominations close later today, the Electoral Commission is expected to meet all successfully nominated candidates and their agents to agree on campaign schedules and guidelines. Mucunguzi said campaign activities will then commence in accordance with the electoral roadmap issued by the commission.

The Electoral Commission has emphasized the need for peaceful campaigns, urging candidates, supporters and political parties to respect electoral laws and maintain harmony throughout the electoral process.

Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli died on April 19, 2026, at the Alexandra Medical Center in Kampala after securing re-election for a second term in office.

She passed away at the age of 40 following an unsuccessful surgical procedure. Her death created a vacancy in one of Uganda’s constitutionally protected affirmative-action parliamentary seats for women.

Nakimuli’s death ignited significant political interest across the island district and beyond, with numerous prospective candidates reportedly expressing interest in replacing her.
