The children had been staying with their 64-year-old grandmother, Kobusinge Birungi, a resident of Kacu Village.Birungi says  she had gone to the garden with her four grandchildren when Kemirembe and Tusiime reportedly slipped away and went to swim in a water-filled sand quarry along the Kacu–Ruboona Road in Kacu Trading Centre.

She said she discovered the children’s bodies floating in the water at around 11 a.m. as she returned home from the garden.

Shocked residents, led by village chairperson Ngonzi Tumwebaze, said the quarry had become a dangerous spot where young children frequently go to play. They called on the government to install culverts along the Kacu–Ruboona Road to improve water drainage and address safety concerns in the area.

Meanwhile, Businge Balinda, the councillor representing persons with disabilities in Bubango Sub-county, urged parents and guardians to ensure children attend school and are properly supervised to prevent similar tragedies.

Police officers from Kyakazihire and Bubango police stations rushed to the scene before being joined by detectives led by Racheal Wakori, the Kibaale District Criminal Investigations Department officer.

The police team retrieved the bodies and handed them over to relatives for burial arrangements after postmortem examinations
