Uganda’s Stable Financial Markets Drive Unit Trust Growth
Uganda’s stable financial markets have been credited for driving growth in the unit trust sector, boosting investor confidence and encouraging more Ugandans to save through collective investment schemes.
According to the latest Capital Markets Authority quarterly report, the sector has grown to more than Shs7 trillion.
the Old Mutual Investment Group Managing Director Zac Kisesi said stable financial markets are critical to sustaining growth and attracting more investors.
Kisesi made the remarks, while speaking at the Old Mutual Investment Group 2026 Half-Year Agent Incentives Awards held at hotel African.
More than 16 agents and 10 units were recognised for their contribution to investment mobilisation, customer retention and financial literacy in the first half of the year.
Edmund Tumwesiga emerged as the top performer in customer retention, retaining customer investments worth UGX 12.36 billion, while Daniel Gatsinzi was named second runner-up with UGX 8.5 billion. Both were rewarded with overseas trips in recognition of their achievements.
Kisesi said agents remain critical to the company’s growth because of their direct engagement with customers and their role in building lasting investment relationships.
“Our agents contribute directly to the growth of our business by bringing in new clients and helping existing customers stay engaged with their investments. That contribution is built on trust. Every clear explanation, every question answered and every follow-up helps strengthen a customer’s confidence in us,” Kisesi said.
Presenting the business performance update for the first half of 2026, Daniel Opiyo, Head of Marketing and Business Development at OMIG, said the company’s assets under management reached UGX 4.14 trillion at the end of June, representing 58.5 per cent of the industry’s total assets.
The company’s unit trust assets grew by UGX 306.1 billion between March and June, an increase of approximately eight per cent. Industry-wide assets also increased from UGX 6.26 trillion in March to UGX 7.08 trillion in June, according to the presentation.
Opiyo commended agents for their continued partnership and contribution to the business, highlighting key developments, including Old Mutual Unit Trust Life Cover, Unit Trust Motor Benefits and the Thrive App Uganda.
He urged the team to build on the progress made during the first half of the year and translate emerging opportunities into stronger business results.
“While we celebrate our progress, let us use the second half of the year to accelerate our market positioning and convert more opportunities into measurable business results. The focus now should be on building on our successes and finishing the year strongly,” Opiyo said.
As competition in the financial services sector intensifies, OMIG is encouraging its agents to embrace innovation and use technology to improve customer engagement and operational efficiency.
Stephen Lubowa, Head of Marketing and Distribution for Life Assurance, urged agents to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to personalise customer interactions, identify new opportunities and improve efficiency while maintaining the trusted relationships that distinguish financial advisers.
He challenged the agents to go beyond their current achievements, embrace new opportunities and continuously raise their performance standards.
