Vivo Energy Uganda Warns Public Against Scrambling for Fuel at Accident Scenes

Vivo Energy Uganda has cautioned the public to always keep a safe distance from the scene in case of fuel tanker accidents and other related road incidents.

 

The warning was sounded by Joanita Mukasa Menya, the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Uganda, during a safety training exercise held in Masaka City today.

 

The exercise was organized as part of activities to mark World Safety Day, which this year is being celebrated under the theme “Ready to Respond.”

 

Speaking during the drill, Joanita said the training was focused on strengthening emergency response procedures for fuel tanker accidents and fire outbreaks.

 

She noted that the initiative is aimed at emphasizing the importance of preparedness and swift, safe action to save lives and property when such incidents occur.

 

Meanwhile, ASP Semwogerere Ismael, the Regional Fire Officer for Greater Masaka, said the first thing the public must understand is that fuel is highly dangerous.

 

He advised that when an incident occurs, such as a fuel tanker overturning, the immediate priority should be to evacuate the area and alert emergency services, rather than rushing to the scene.

 

Semwogerere explained that most casualties in fuel-related fires are caused by people scrambling to siphon fuel from overturned tankers, a risky practice that has claimed many lives across the country.

 

He therefore urged the public to desist from siphoning fuel whenever a tanker is involved in an accident.

 

The Masaka training brought together Vivo Energy staff, police fire and rescue services, and local leaders, demonstrating joint emergency response tactics in case of a fuel fire.
