Dance hall artiste Khalifa Aganaga has responded to accusations of copyright infringement regarding an Afrigo Band song.
His response comes after Afrigo band management promised to take legal action against him for performing one of their songs without permission.
One of Afrigo Band’s directors James Wasula had threatened to sue Aganaga for re-doing the song Muziki without their permission and recently said that they had finalized plans to take the singer to court over copyright infringement
While appearing on a local television program on Thursday, Aganaga denied the claims and said that he has never done any song that belongs to Afrigo Band
He however said that the incident which Afrigo band members saw on a video clip was when he was asked by a local Television show host to name his favorite oldies song while on air and he responded by saying it was Muziki by the Afrigo Band and when he sang part of the song the program, they claimed it was a copyright infringement.
“I just mimed the song while on a local television program last year and miming the song doesn’t mean that I breached the copyrights of the song,” he said
He said that he is one of best songwriters in the country and doesn’t need to steal or copy people’s songs as the Afrigo band management claimed
Last year, the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) summoned Aganaga to appear for disciplinary action over the matter and he agreed to meet them in the presence of Afrigo band members Moses Matovu and James Wasula to address the matter but the issue has never been resolved.
