Omukama Iguru Suspends 32nd Coronation Anniversary Over Ebola Outbreak

The 32nd Coronation Anniversary celebrations of the Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, have been suspended following the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

The celebrations had been scheduled for June 11, 2026, at the Kingdom Chambers in Hoima City to commemorate the anniversary of Omukama Iguru’s ascension to the throne on June 11, 1994. The annual cultural event traditionally attracts thousands of kingdom subjects from across Uganda and the diaspora.

According to the Kingdom Prime Minister, Andrew Byakutaga, the decision was taken as a precautionary measure after confirmed Ebola cases were reported in Uganda and neighboring DR Congo. Byakutaga explained that the suspension aligns with the directive issued by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni aimed at limiting large gatherings and preventing possible cross-border transmission of the disease.

He urged kingdom subjects and the general public to follow guidance issued by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization on Ebola prevention, including reporting suspected symptoms to health authorities for immediate response.
