A TikTok content creator has been remanded to Luzira Prison on charges related to allegedly posting defamatory content targeting the head of Uganda’s External Security Organisation (ESO), Ambassador Joseph Ocwet.
The accused, Benson Muyingo, 32, also known by his social media moniker Benson Pro UG, appeared before Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Prosecution claims that Muyingo, alongside unidentified accomplices, used his TikTok platform in July 2025 to publish a video accusing the ESO Director General of involvement in land-related fraud in Kasenyi Bendegere.
The post in question, allegedly made on the account Benson Pro UG Official, reportedly described the ESO boss as being involved in “land grabbing and fraudulent activities.”
The Court has heard that the content in issue was shared with the intent to damage the reputation of Ambassador Ocwet, contrary to provisions of Uganda’s Computer Misuse Act.
Muyingo denied the charge during his appearance in court and informed the Magistrate that he had brought sureties to support his bail request.
However, the bail hearing did not proceed after the magistrate noted that the State Attorney assigned to the case was unavailable, citing commitments at the City Hall Court.
As a result, Muyingo was remanded to Luzira Prison until August 12, 2025, when the court is expected to reconsider the bail application.
A resident of Mutundwe, Rubaga Division, Muyingo describes himself as a Muganda by tribe and Anglican by faith. His TikTok channel, known for critical commentary on governance and social issues, has garnered a sizable following online.
The Computer Misuse Act prohibits, among other offences, the transmission of false, misleading, or malicious information via digital platforms, particularly when intended to defame or cause reputational harm.
