Supreme Court Upholds 20 Year Jail Term for Kasiwukira Murder Convicts

The Supreme Court in Kampala has confirmed a 20-year jail term handed to Jaden Ashraf a Police Constable Jaden and his 50-year-old girlfriend Sandrah Nakungu for the murder of businessman Eriya Sebunya Bugembe also Known as Kasiwukira.

A panel of five Supreme Court Justices led by Professor Lillian Ekirikubinza have upheld the conviction and respective sentences after dismissing Nakungu and Jaden’s appeal for lacked of merit. 

Kasiwukira was run down by a speeding vehicle on October 17th, 2014 during an early morning jogging session near his home in Muyenga, a Kampala suburb. 

Following his death, the police arrested his Widow Sarah Nabikolo, her sister Sandra Nakungu and PC Jayden Ashiraf. Later Nabikolo was acquitted but in 2016, the late High court JudgeWilson Masalu Musene convicted Nakungu and Jaden for murder.

Justice Musene believed prosecution’s evidence that Nakungu owned the vehicle that Jaden used to knock dead Kasiwukira.

As a result, Nakungu and Jaden appealed their convictions and sentences in the Court of Appeal but they were upheld. The DPP also appealed the acquittal of the widow, but she equally lost.

Dissatisfied with the Nakungu and Jaden appealed to the court of appeal which upheld the sentence and later to the Supreme Court which after a review of the evidence found no reason to tamper with the sentences.
