Cabinet approves use of NIN for paying taxes

The cabinet has approved the use of the national identification number (NIN) as now the tax identification number.

By adopting the NIN as the tax identification number, it will establish one consistent identity for every tax payer.

According to the minister of ICT and national guidance Kasule Lumumba says, this will improve the accuracy of our tax payer register and strengthen the ability to identify and trace tax payers and also make the data systems work better.

It will also improve compliance, reduce revenue leakage and make it simpler for citizens to register and communicate with the tax authorities.

For years, our tax registration system has relied on a separate, largely manual TIN based process. It has served it’s purpose but it has also left us with outdated and inconsistent records and that creates real weaknesses in data accuracy, compliance and service delivery and so by adopting the NIN as the tax identification number,we are establishing one consistent identity for every tax payer,” says minister Lumumba”.

It will also help us improve compliance, reduce revenue leakage and make it simpler for citizens to register and communicate with the tax authorities.

This will also give us visibility into world wide income, and more broadly it strengthens our national identification system as a whole.

Lumumba said this while addressing media about cabinet decisions that were approved yesterday at state house entebbe.
