Bulenga Taxi Driver Convicted Over Wearing Military Attire

The General Court Martial in Makindye has convicted a taxi driver for wearing military attire without authorisation. Isa Asimwe, 25, a resident of Bulenga in Wakiso District, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to unauthorised wearing of military uniform, contrary to Section 162 of the amended Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Act.

The court, presided over by Brigadier General Richard Tukacungurwa, convicted Asimwe on his own plea of guilty after he admitted the prosecution’s account of the offence. The prosecution, led by Lieutenant Regina Nanzaala, told the court that Asimwe was found wearing military trousers, a hat and jungle boots on January 14, 2026, in Bugweri Town Council, Bugweri District.

The court heard that Asimwe had travelled with colleagues to attend a meeting at the residence of the Bugweri Resident District Commissioner. While at the premises, an intelligence officer attached to Magamaga Barracks reportedly noticed that Asimwe was dressed in partial military combat attire and approached him for an explanation.

Asimwe reportedly told the officer that he was a civilian and that the military clothing belonged to another person identified as Nathan Munumbya. When the prosecution presented the facts of the case, Asimwe accepted the allegations, telling the court: “I plead guilty to the brief facts.”

The court subsequently convicted him and adjourned the case to November 10, 2026, for the presentation of his criminal record and mitigation before sentencing.
