Besigye in Court for His Pre-trail Session

Jailed opposition leader Rt. Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye is appearing before the High Court’s criminal division for a pre-trial session, during which the prosecution is expected to make full disclosures of the evidence against him. Dr. Besigye, along with his aide Hajji Obeid Lutale and UPDF Capt. Denish Oola, is charged with treason.

They are accused of conspiring to overthrow the government of Uganda by attending meetings in Geneva, Greece, Nairobi, and Kampala to discuss mobilization strategies and solicit logistical support for committing acts of treason. The prosecution asserts that Dr. Besigye, Hajji Lutale, and Capt. Oola, having learned of plans to overthrow the Ugandan government, failed to report this information to the relevant authorities. The alleged offenses took place between 2024 and 2024. However, the prosecution, represented by Assistant DPP Thomas Jatiko, has requested an additional week to disclose its evidence to Dr. Besigye’s defense team fully.

Jatiko acknowledged that they have made partial disclosures, including transcribed audio recordings, and need more time to transfer the information to devices accessible to the defense team.
