A 24-year-old mother has been arrested for stabbing to death her biological daughter in Natete over unresolved domestic disputes with her husband.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, has identified the suspect as Aine Shivan, a resident of Lusaze zone in Rubaga Division, Kampala, who stabbed her 3-year-old daughter, Neila Ayongeirwe, to death before attempting to commit suicide on Tuesday.
The suspect allegedly stabbed her 3-year-old daughter while the husband, Dickson Bakwatanisa, was away. After the act, she attempted to commit suicide by cutting herself on the neck. Police preliminary findings indicate the couple had unresolved domestic violence issues.
Bakwatanisa told police that his wife called him at night, asking him to come home as there was an important issue she wanted to discuss.
“She called me, but I asked her to wait so we could talk about it on the weekend when I normally return home. She switched off her phone, only to receive a call from the area chairperson calling me to come home, that my wife had killed our child and also committed suicide. I think she wanted to kill both of us,” Bakwatanisa said.
Some neighbours said their problems stemmed from the woman’s suspicions that her husband was cheating on her with another woman in Kazo, where he works as a doctor.
Kawala confirmed the suspect has been arrested and is receiving treatment in the hospital under police guard.
“We strongly condemn such acts of violence within domestic settings,” she said, urging victims of domestic violence to seek assistance from the police Child and Family Protection Unit for support and protection.
