Edward Ssebufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, the chief bodyguard of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, is expected to appear at Masaka High Court this afternoon to face undisclosed charges.
Ssebufu, who was reportedly abducted by security operatives from Mukono District on April 27, 2025, was held incommunicado for days until last week, when Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Museveni, acknowledged that he had been detained in his basement.
Last week, the Uganda Human Rights-UHRC Chairperson, Mariam Wangandya directed General Muhoozi to release Eddie Mutwe, saying he was being held in violation of the law.
Today, Sebufu, who appeared to be struggling to walk, was supported by two plain-clothed security operatives as he limped towards the court cells.
He is expected to be charged with an undisclosed offence. Security operatives, who dropped him at court, barred journalists from approaching or covering his case.
Edward Sebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, was reportedly picked up on April 27th by unidentified individuals in both civilian clothes and military fatigues in the central town of Kiwango, sparking public outrage and concern about his safety.
In a series of posts on X, Gen Kainerugabai, said Sebuufu was “in my basement”, attaching the bodyguard’s photo with a clean-shaven head.
He also threatened to use violence against Sebuufu.
Gen Kainerugabai’s remarks have sparked public anger with Ugandans using the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe to demand Sebuufu’s release and condemn his detention.
