Uganda will on Thursday July 11th join the rest of the world to commemorate World Population Day.
This year’s day will be commemorated under the theme: “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future: Towards Meeting the Needs of All”.
The day aims at raising awareness about various critical population issues including family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.
The national celebrations will be held in Arua district at Eruba Primary School grounds.
According to the latest census preliminary results, Uganda’s population reached 45,935,046, marking an increase of 11.3 million people since the last census in 2014 with some districts in Northern Uganda particularly in the West Nile registering significant increases in population numbers.
According to the National Population Council, Arua district was selected to host the national celebrations in order to highlight the district’s prevailing population development concerns and draw the attention of policy makers.
The district is renowned for its big refugee population which exerts a heavy burden on the environment and natural resources this in addition to the young population which requires considerable investment in socio services to cater for the youthful population while also taking into account the needs of the elderly population.
