Members of the Uganda Performing rights society(UPRS) have agreed to pay a Ugx 50,000 membership fees per year.
This resolution was reached at during the UPRS annual general meeting that took place at Uganda Business Facilitation centre in Kampala on friday 28th, March,2025.
Some members had proposed a fee of Ugx 50,000 while others had proposed Ugx 100,000 fee but the majority of them agreed to pay Ugx 50,000 to the organization.
The proposal for the annual membership fee was fronted by accountant Mwase Daniel, the auditor of the organization who suggested that each member should pay the money to help the organization manage its operational costs.
“ In my opinion and recommendation, i suggest that members start paying for membership to help UPRS manage its costs, if the 4000 members of UPRS pay Ugx 50,000, the organization will have at lease sh.200 million for operational costs per year,” he said.
The huge operational costs of UPRS are over Ugx 500M and over 375 million is used to pay salaries of staff of the organization while the rest of the money goes into expenses like Rent, audit, Value added tax of 18 % among others leaving members will little money to share as Royalties for their music.
Mwase said this is the reason why royalties for artistes are always very little. The resolution was passed in the board meeting chaired by Martin Nkoyoyo (YOYO) and other board members that included Phina Mugerwa and Daniel Kazibwe (Ragga Dee)
