Electoral Area Demarcation and Polling Station Re-organization for 2026 General Elections in Uganda

Written by on July 30, 2024

The chairperson of the independent Electoral Commission Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi has confirmed that the demarcation of electoral areas for local government council elections and re-organisation of polling stations in preparations for the 2026 general elections kicks off in August 2024.

He disclosed this during the ongoing workshop for various stakeholders in Kampala saying that this exercise had to begin at the start of this month as per the road map but due to financial challenges in the last financial year the exercise will now commence in August.

Justice Byabakama also notes that the re-organisation of polling stations ensures a manageable number of voters per polling station .

He adds that the exercise will include locating polling stations in the central places, replicating polling stations that were affected by infrastructural development, splitting polling stations that have more than the optimum number of voters, reducing the number of polling stations in the given polling centre and ensure that each parish and electoral area has at least one polling station.

He thus appealed to stakeholders to promote peace and avoid violence as they engage in this exercise.
