The government says there is a decrease of Human trafficking in 2023 compared to 2022.
This is in a human trafficking report 2023, launched earlier this morning in Kampala conducted by countering trafficking in persons department under the ministry of internal affairs.
While launching the report, Col. Geoffrey Kambere commissioner immigration highlighted that in 2023, there was a 16.16% decrease in the number of cases reported to police from 1200 cases reported in 2022 to 1006 cases reported in 2023. He says this was attributed partly to the increase in public awareness, sensitization campaigns against trafficking in persons , increased enforcement by police and prosecutors.
However he adds that cases of child trafficking were highest with 510, representing 50.69% as compared to adult trafficking which had 496 cases representing 49.30%.
Kambere adds that according to police records, out of 1006 cases reported in 2023, 576 cases were submitted to office of director of public prosecutions for perusal and legal advice, 331 cases were taken to court out if which 11 cases secured convictions and 01 case dismissed while 319 cases were pending in court.
