Kasese Municipality Orders Demolition of Temporary Church and School Structures

Kasese Municipality has issued an urgent directive requiring religious and educational institutions to replace temporary wooden and iron-sheet structures with permanent brick buildings by July 1.

The order, announced by Deputy Town Clerk Kairi Zedekiya Kambasu, forms part of new municipal trade and urban development regulations aimed at improving public safety and enhancing the municipality’s physical planning standards.

Kambasu warned that authorities will begin enforcing demolitions against non-compliant structures, including those erected within road reserves, if owners fail to comply voluntarily.

The directive is expected to significantly affect the religious community, particularly the Worldwide Anglican Church, Kasese Diocese, which operates more than 25 churches built from timber and iron sheets. According to church leaders, only one of the churches currently meets the municipality’s requirement for a permanent brick structure.

Responding to the directive, Rt. Rev. Christopher Bwambale of the Worldwide Anglican Church appealed to municipal authorities to grant the church additional time to transition to permanent structures.

He emphasised the need for a safe and sustainable process and urged officials to exercise patience to avoid disrupting worship activities and community cohesion.

Meanwhile, Rev. Peter Sebeya, who oversees development projects for the Worldwide Anglican Church in Kasese, revealed plans to construct more permanent church buildings over the next year.
