Security Guard in Mawanda Road Gold, Cash Theft Arrested

Justine Akena, a private security guard with Magnum Security Company, was arrested in Bweyale in connection with the alleged theft of about 29 million shillings and 900 grams of gold valued at 500 million shillings.  

At the time of theft, Akena, who was deployed to guard Goldex Uganda Limited on Mawanda Road in Kamwokya, allegedly broke into a vehicle belonging to Maggie Katuramu over the weekend. He took a bag containing cash.  

Although initial reports at Kira Road Police Division said the suspect fled with 290 shillings, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said police made an error. 

“The actual amount stolen was 29 million shillings. The first figure of 290 shillings was a mistake. We arrested the suspect in Gaspa Village, Bweyale. He admitted to the offence. He had used part of the money to open a retail shop, that’s where we found him,” Owoyesigyire said.   

Owoyesigyire said the suspect is currently in custody at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue and preparations for prosecution are underway.


Several major robbery cases have occurred previously. Often, suspects are traced and arrested using details from their homes or relatives who acted as guarantors when they joined the companies. But some suspects completely disappeared.

In November 2024, two G4S security guards were apprehended for participating in the robbery of over 1 billion shillings while transporting money in a bullion van on Entebbe Road. They abandoned the vehicle in Lungujja and were later arrested in Kwania District.

 Abraham Opedun, a security guard attached to Safetec Security Company Ltd, was also involved in setting fire to Snail Forex Bureau Limited at Nyumba Kubwa building, Arua Park, Kampala in 2025, and stealing about 15.2 million shillings
