Sarah Bireete Charged at Buganda Road Court
The Director Centre and Constitutional Governance Sarah Birete, has been charged before the Buganda Road court with allegedly obtaining and disclosing National Voter’s Information without consent from the Electoral Commission.
Birete was arrested on Monday this week and spent the Newyear’s festival in a police cell, causing an uproar from both the civic and Human rights spheres.
On Friday, she was arraigned before the Buganda Road court for formal reading of the charges.
Bireete has, however, denied any wrongdoing before the Grade One magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko.
Prosecution alleges that between January and December 2025 at various places within Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso Districts, Sarah Birete unlawfully obtained or disclosed National Voter’s Information data, which is controlled and processed by the Electoral Commission; thus offending Sec 35 and 2 of the Data Protection and Privacy Act.
She has been remanded to Luzira prison until the 21st of January while the prosecution verifies the details presented by her sureties.
