Court Defers Senyonyi Election Petition Judgement

The High Court in Kampala has postponed the judgment on a petition challenging the election of Joel Ssenyonyi as MP for Nakawa Division West to October 30, 2026.

Justice Allan Paul Nshimye stated the ruling was delayed due to late document submissions.

The petition, filed by lawyer Ivan Bwowe, contests Ssenyonyi’s election, claiming he was improperly nominated for “Nakawa West,” which he argues is not the official constituency name.

Bwowe received only 271 votes against Ssenyonyi’s 21,761 votes.

The respondents, including Ssenyonyi and the Electoral Commission, argue that Bwowe lacks standing since he did not meet the statutory requirements to bring the petition.

They also reference a previous case dismissed earlier this year, asserting that Bwowe cannot raise the same issue again.

Furthermore, they contest that Bwowe has not shown that any alleged electoral law breach affected the election results significantly.

Bwowe seeks a declaration that he is the rightful candidate, maintaining the election was conducted unlawfully.

On the same day, Justice Nshimye will also hear another election petition filed by Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro against Fred Ruhindi in Nakawa Division Eas
