Policeman Shoots Voter Dead as Chaos Erupts in NRM Village Polls

The police in Luuka District have arrested one of their own for shooting dead a 30-year-old man during the NRM village polls in Luuka District.

Swaliki Lwayanga, a resident of Bulanga Central Cell, in Bulanga town council, was shot on Wednesday by Dennis Emojong.

It is reported that Lwayanga was participating in the National Resistance Movement-NRM structure elections at Noor Islamic primary teacher’s college playground, in Luswiga zone, in Bulanga town council.

Busoga North police spokesperson Michael Kasadha says that during the polls, the situation turned chaotic, with rowdy youths pelting stones towards the election officials.

In retaliation, the police fired live ammunition in the air with the hopes of quelling the situation, but the chaos raged on for about 30 minutes, with angry youths attempting to round off the security personnel in the area.

This triggered the police personnel to fire live ammunition at the lower range, killing Lwayanga instantly and injuring two others.

Kasadha confirmed the arrest of Emojong, who is accused of releasing live ammunition, causing Lwayanga’s death.

Ivan Oketch, who was injured, says that the shooting happened outside his house and was not participating in the exercise.  Oketch says that he saw a big crowd running towards his house and stepped out to see what had transpired, only to be shot in the leg.

Oketch wants police to extensively investigate the matter and ensure the timely prosecution of police personnel involved in this shooting incident.
