Parliament Postpones Debate on Allegations of Casino Operations in Uganda’s Dubai Consulate

Parliament has postponed debate on the allegations that point to the ministry of foreign affairs operating a Casino in Uganda’s Consulate in Dubai

 

Several investigations by security agencies have confirmed the existence of the said Casino in the consulate which is against international diplomatic guidelines.

 

MPs were set to debate the matter during plenary.

 

However The minister of foreign affairs Jeje Odong has revealed that there is still an active investigation on the matter and the ministry awaits the conclusion of the same to give its position.

 

“These allegations touch on the misuse of a diplomatic facility against diplomatic practice as per the Vienna convention, these allegations touch on trust and integrity of individuals some of whom are Muslims, these allegations touch on the very important matter of diplomatic relations between countries.” Odong told Parliament.

 

The Minister’s position was supported by Busiro south MP Medard Ssegona who cited the sensitivity of the matter

 

The deputy speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has ruled that the parliament will wait for the outcome of the investigations.

 

This development follows media reports indicating that Uganda’s consulate building in Dubai, is being used as a covert casino, an issue picked up and raised as a matter of national importance by the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Muwada Nkunyingi (NUP, Kyadondo County East) during the sitting of Parliament on Thursday 1 August 2024.

Nkunyingi called for an investigation into the allegations, saying that the matter, if left unchecked, has international ramifications.
