Govt Welcomes New Unicef Country Boss

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has welcomed Dr. Robin Nandy as the new Country Representative for Uganda, succeeding Dr. Mohamed El Munir A. Safieldin, who served in the role since January 2021.
Dr. Nandy, who previously held a similar position in the Islamic Republic of Iran, presented his credentials to John Mulimba, Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala on Tuesday.

Minister Mulimba expressed his appreciation for UNICEF’s continuous collaboration with Uganda, particularly in advancing health, education, and overall child welfare. He emphasized that children are the foundation of Uganda’s future, making the partnership with UNICEF crucial in achieving the country’s development goals. Mulimba also pointed out the importance of addressing global challenges such as climate change and pandemics, which directly impact the well-being of children.

He urged a cooperative approach to tackle these challenges and stressed the need to focus on key social issues like teenage pregnancies and early marriages, advocating for a shift in societal attitudes to drive sustainable change.
The Minister assured Dr. Nandy of Uganda’s ongoing commitment to working with UNICEF and maintaining an open-door policy during his tenure, expressing confidence that his leadership will strengthen the existing partnership and further Uganda’s national development objectives.

Dr. Nandy thanked the Ugandan government for the warm reception and reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to aligning its country cooperation program with Uganda’s development priorities under the UN Cooperation Framework. He emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to attract funding and ensure the success of joint initiatives, particularly those aimed at fostering social and behavioral changes and building resilience in vulnerable communities.
