The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has made changes in dates for the commencement of presidential campaigns and nomination of members of parliament, respectively.
According to the chairperson of the commission, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, presidential nomination will take place next week on September 23rd and 24th, 2025, as earlier scheduled.
Now, the changes made show that presidential campaigns will officially commence on September 29th, 2025. Initially, the campaigns were set to commence on October 4th, 2025.
Nomination of MPs will take place on October 22nd – 23rd, 2025. The initial dates were set for October 15th – 16th, 2025.
According to Byabakama, changes have been made due to other international conferences that will be hosted by Uganda within that specific time, which he says will affect the nomination exercise, among others.
Byabakama was speaking during the handover ceremony of the newly proposed permanent home of the commission by the National Housing and Construction Company Limited at Lweza Lubowa along Entebbe road, where presidential nomination will be conducted next week.
The minister for works and transport Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala congratulated the commission upon acquiring its new home, stressing that the place will be utilised as a “National tally centre” in the forthcoming general election.
