Muhangi Pleads for Out-of-Court Settlement in Bebe Cool Copyright Lawsuit

Comedian Alex Muhangi the proprietor of Comedy Store,  has  appeared before City Hall Court  on charges of copyright infringement.

Muhangi was sued by musician Moses Sali  popularly known as Bebe Cool.

Bebe Cool  accuses Muhangi of using his music on Comedy Store without proper authorization. Bebe Cool alleges that his music performances were posted on the Comedy Store social media platforms without his consent.

The two, once close friends, reportedly fell out earlier this month after Muhangi accused Bebe Cool of deliberately refusing to perform at his Comedy Store event despite receiving a partial payment.

Bebe Cool, however, defended himself, stating that he could not perform until Muhangi cleared his full payment.

The spat has now escalated into a legal dispute with Bebe Cool seeking compensation in hundreds of millions of shillings.

During Wednesday’s court session, Muhangi requested that the matter be settled out of court, insisting that he and Bebe Cool were friends. In response, the court granted both parties two weeks to reach an amicable resolution and report back on the outcome.

In his suit, Bebe Cool is demanding for 600 million shillings in compensation, failure of which he has asked the court to impose a custodial sentence on Muhangi should he fail to pay.

Grade one magistrate Aisu Nicholas has given both parties up to 1st April to reach an out-of-court settlement or proceed to a full trial.
