As Uganda joins the global community in observing World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, disturbing statistics reveal that children account for half of the victims of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in the country.
According to Derrick Basalirwa Kigenyi, Deputy Head of Uganda’s National Coordination Office for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons, the 2023 National Counter TIP report shows that 1698 persons fell victim to TIP in 2023, with a staggering 1066 being juvenile victims (728 female and 328 male).
Basalirwa expressed concern over the high proportion of child victims, which has long-lasting effects on their mental and physiological well-being. Most victims were subjected to commercial sex trafficking, followed by labor exploitation, with the Middle East being a notable destination, particularly Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, and Iraq.
This year’s theme, “Leaving no child behind in this fight,” emphasizes the need to prioritize child protection from human trafficking. Authorities are urging all Ugandans to join the fight against human trafficking, especially of children, noting that the girl child is the most affected victim.
