Uganda has launched the largest malaria vaccine introduction to date, targeting 1.1 million children under two years in 105 high and moderate transmission districts.
The R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, administered in four doses, will provide vital protection against malaria, which is the leading cause of illness and death among young children in Uganda.
According to the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the introduction of the vaccine marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s fight against malaria.
“It is expected to prevent at least 800 cases of severe malaria among children every day and ease the financial burden on families,” she said.
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has provided essential financial support for the procurement, transport, and rollout of the vaccine doses. To date, Gavi has supported 18 African countries in integrating the malaria vaccine into routine immunization programs.
The rollout is a result of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Health, Gavi, UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), PATH, and CHAI. UNICEF has procured and air-freighted the vaccines, while WHO has provided guidance and technical assistance to ensure successful implementation.
The vaccine introduction is a significant step towards reducing the malaria burden in Uganda, which is among the top five African countries with the highest malaria burden.
With continued funding and support, Uganda aims to expand the vaccination program nationwide, protecting more children and saving lives.
