UCC Amplifies Call against Explicit Music Content to Protect Minors

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has called for greater responsibility in the music industry to prevent children from being exposed to inappropriate content.

In a statement,UCC spokesperson Ibrahim Bbosa expressed concern over the increasing presence of explicit music on public airwaves, making it difficult for parents to shield young audiences from adult themes.

“Today, we hear songs in taxis, on the radio, and at public gatherings that leave parents struggling to explain their meaning to children,” Bbosa said.

He emphasized that legendary Ugandan artists, such as Lord Fred Sebatta, mastered the art of storytelling using metaphors and symbolism, ensuring that their music remained suitable for all audiences.

He urged modern artists to adopt a similar approach that balances artistic freedom with social responsibility.

Bbosa stressed the need for proper content classification to prevent children from being exposed to material beyond their understanding.

“This is not about limiting creativity but about guiding it. Music should be bold and expressive while remaining mindful of its audience,” he said.

The UCC’s concerns come amid growing debates over the influence of music on young minds, with some stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of content regulations.

The commission urged musicians, producers, and broadcasters to prioritize responsible content creation that educates, inspires, and entertains without compromising children’s innocence.
