The state has formally dropped murder and Terrorism charges against the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.
The development was revealed before the Highcourt’s International Crimes Division as justice Alice Komuhangi Kaukha took judicial notice and condoled with the entire nation for the demise of Muhammad Ssegirinya who was jointly accused with the Makindye West MP Allah Ssewanyana and 4 others for having a hand in the 2021 murders that rocked the greater Masaka region commonly referred to as ” Bijambiya”.
Before court, Ssegirinya’s lawyer Samuel Mulindwa Muyiizi informed justice Komuhangi that his client died on the 8th/ January 2025 and that’s the day their instructions ceased.
Muyizzi then sought guidance from court on how to proceed representing Allan Ssewanyana prompting court to task lead prosecutor Richard Birivumbuka to explain.
Birivumbuka too passed on condolences from the 0DPP and informed court that he needed more time to re-orgainse the evidence and have the indictment amended to drop Ssegirinya and be able to continue with the rest.
The court discharged Ssegirinya and ordered that since other suspects are still in prison, Birivumbuka should be given 2 weeks until the 1st of April to amend its indictment and have the pre-trial proceedings including reading of the charges again on the 7th $ 8th April.
Prosecution still maintains that in August 2021 the 2 MPs connived with others and planned to kill several people in the greater Masaka region.
