Musician Shakira Kamulegeya, popularly known as Shakira Shakira, has announced her intention to contest for the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament seat in the 2026 general elections.
Speaking to the media, Shakira emphasized her commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Kampala residents, particularly women and children.
“I am clever, and I want to address the problems of the people of Kampala,” she stated.
“I have a vision to fulfill, and I am serious about it. You can even see that I am fully dressed in gomesi (traditional attire), which shows my readiness for leadership.”
Although she has not yet aligned herself with any political party, Shakira expressed openness to any party willing to support her candidacy.
“I don’t have any political party at the moment, but if any party takes interest in me, I am ready,” she said.
She highlighted the oppression of women in leadership as one of her main motivations for joining the race.
“I want to fight for women because we are oppressed, and we are not many in leadership. There are a lot of issues in Uganda that need to be addressed, especially children who lack parental support,” she added.
Responding to critics who question her suitability based on her public image, Shakira defended her credentials and personal conduct.
“I have the qualifications, and for those who think I dress indecently, that is not true. I am the forthcoming Woman MP for Kampala,” she declared.
