Buganda Road court has convicted and sentenced a 35-year-old quack medical officer , Francis Taulula, to a 2 years and 15 days imprisonment term.
Taulula was convicted of impersonating a qualified medical officer and there by causing the deaths of at least three expectant mothers.
At the time of his arrest, Taulula had posed as an intern doctor at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he worked for 12 months, earning a monthly allowance of 1.8 million shillings.
Taulula, a resident of Palisa District, opted to enter a plea-bargain agreement with the Office of the DPP in order to plead guilty to offences of forgery and uttering forged academic qualifications in exchange to a lenient punishment.
According to court documets, Taulula forged ,a Bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from Mount Kenya University which he presented before the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council in May 2023.
Also court heard from the evidence of Dr. Ibrahim Bwanga, a gynecologist and Acting Director of Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, that Taulula’s fraud led to the deaths of three pregnant women during surgical procedures: Harriet Atugoza, Scovia Atuhura, and Gladys Pifua who died due to excessive bleeding and sepsis.
Dr. Bwanga added that Taulula frequently conducted surgical procedures independently, despite being required to work under close supervision as an Intern.
Chief magistrate Ronald Kayizzi further ordered Taulula to refund 21,600,000 shillings, being the accumulated allowances he earned from the government of Uganda.
Taulula’s case highlights the importance of verifying medical qualifications and ensuring that healthcare professionals adhere to proper procedures and protocols to save lives.
