Police Hunt Security Guard Over UGX290m Theft

The Police’s Flying Squad has launched a manhunt for a security guard who was manning the Goldex global Company offices and vanished with a huge amount of money  amounting to 290 million Ugandan shillings over the weekend.

Reports by Kira-Road Police Division indicate that the suspect, identified as Justin Akena, who is attached to Magnum Security Company Limited, one of the security companies in the country, and was deployed to guard Goldex Global Company Limited’s offices at Mawanda Road in Kampala.

The suspect, currently on the run, reportedly broke into a vehicle under his protection in the company premises and took a bag containing a huge sum of money and some alleged gold over the weekend.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the cash robbery at Goldex Global Limited’s offices on Mawanda Road where Akena had been deployed as a security guard for some time.

“We appeal to the public who may know something about Akena Justin’s hideout for information,” Owoyesigyire said. “He broke into a vehicle he was guarding on Saturday and took 290 million shillings and some gold, then disappeared. Our teams are currently tracking him down.”

Owoyesigyire said police teams, alongside the security company, are making all efforts to apprehend the suspect and have him face the law.

Several major robbery cases have occurred previously. Often, suspects are traced and arrested using details from their homes, or relatives who acted as guarantors when they joined the companies. But some suspects completely disappeared.

In November 2024, two G4S security guards were apprehended for participating in the robbery of over 1 billion shillings while transporting money in a bullion van on Entebbe Road. They abandoned the vehicle in Lungujja and were later arrested in Kwania District.

Abraham Opedun, a security guard attached to Safetec Security Company Ltd, was also involved in setting fire to Snail Forex Bureau Limited at Nyumba Kubwa building, Arua Park, Kampala in 2025, and stealing about 15.2 million shillings.

According to  Private Security Association reports, guard involvement in cash robberies is often driven by factors like low pay, delayed salaries, inadequate training, and employers hiring guards from uncertified companies to cut costs.
