NUP in Concerted Move to Secure Mandatory Bail for Jailed Members

The National Unity Platform( NUP) party has taken action to force the release of all its members who are languishing in different prisons across the country.

Through filing numerous applications for mandatory bail, party lawyers are putting the judiciary to task to release all  jailed members on bail who have exceeded the required 180 days on remand.

The lawyers contend that even without any formal applications, the judiciary can move on its own motion to release on bail  such remandees who don’t have dates for trial set.

Among the jailed NUP  supporters,  is a one Anthony Agaba commonly known as Bobi Young who has been on remand for close to a year since he was first arraigned before the now defunct General Court Martial on charges of unlawful possession of  defence stores (millitary pips).

Today after 9 months without appearing before any court for trial,  Agaba has been presented to Highcourt Judge Emmauel Baguma for hearing of his application for mandatory release on bail claiming he has spent more than 200 days on remand without trial.

However the DPP, has not yet filed a response to Agaba’s  application prompting the judge to issue timeliness for filing and exchanging written submissions among  lawyers before he proceeds to deliver his ruling on 22nd / August via e-mail.

According to NUP lawyers, the continued incarceration of their members is an abuse to their liberty and they have vowed to come up with whatever means or measures to rescue their  members who have no hope of when they will ever be tried or freed.
