The National Resistance Movement Election Disputes Tribunal has started the hearing of election petitions arising from the just concluded party Primaries. The Tribunal, although headed by Lawyer John Musiime is split into eight separate panels that are hearing cases under a mega tent in groups.
Each Panel is comprised of 3 people who are presiding over the disputes as the decision makers. The Tribunal is also a quasi-judicial body, and when our Reporter moved inside, some people were adjourning cases and others were asking for more time to bring in crucial documents. The majority of the panels are headed by Top Lawyers picked from various places in the country and assisted by popular faces in Town.
Some of the Prominent people presiding over the cases include Lawyer Anthony Bazira, Lawyer Tony Tumukunde, and Joshua Byamazima. The Chairperson of the Tribunal, Lawyer Musiime, is also leading one of the eight panels. The decisions from all panels are expected to be reviewed by the Tribunal as a whole before they are confirmed as final.
The Panels are expected to handle at least 381 petitions and deliver decisions by September 1st, 2025. Some lawyers who have been seen accompanying petitioners include Mukasa Mbidde, Evans Ochieng, among others.
There is a Clerk at the entrance of the waiting area and the names of people to go and appear before the Tribunals are read out by a staffer in the waiting area.
The waiting area is a tent which has a plywood screen separating the Tribunal from the Waiting room/tent. Those in the waiting area so far include Herbert Anderson Burora, the elected the flag bearer for Nakawa Constituency, whose victory is being challenged by Businessman cum politician Mukesh Shukla Babubhai.
Also present is Naome Stella Nyomera, who is challenging the victory of Faith Nakut Loru, the Incumbent District Woman MP for Napak, who was elected as the Party’s flag bearer. Nakut is accused of vote rigging. Some of the petitioners allege violence, intimidation of voters, election malpractice such as fraud and bribery, and alteration of Declaration forms and multiple voting of people moving from one village to the other. There are also dozens of other justice seekers from the various constituents waiting for their cases to be read.
