Not Yet Uhuru – Judge to Rule on Eron Kiiza Release Petition Next Week

Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s lawyer Eron Kiiza has to wait up to  Monday afternoon to find out whether he will regain his freedom.

Kiiza was sentenced to a 9 months imprisonment term at Kitalya prison for contempt of the General Court Martial. 

Kiiza has been brought before the Civil Division of the Highcourt this morning to recieve a ruling on his application for unconditional release, which Justice Douglous Singiza has been unable to deliver. Hence forth Eron Kiiza has been returned to Kitalya prison where he has been incarcerated since 7th/ January 2025.

However According to AG’s representative Johnson Natuhwera Kiiza is serving a lawful sentence because the Supreme court  affirmed the existence of the General Court Martial  but  limited its jurisdiction to service offences.  

Natuhwera further argues, Kiiza is bringing his grievances before a wrong court as  he ought to have appealed his 9 months sentence before  the  criminal and not the Civil  Division of the Highcourt . 

However Kiiza’s lawyers Peter Walubiri and George Musisi are asking  Justice Douglous Singiza to apply his unlimited jurisdiction to  enforce the judgment of the Supreme court and order for Kiiza’s release. 

Justice Singiza reserved the ruling for Monday at 2.30PM after he condisders  many other applications filed in respect of Eron Kiiza’s release.
