Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke has asked Baby Gloria’s mother Betty Nakibuuka, to respect the boundaries of her daughter’s marriage.
Baby Gloria, real name Gloria Mulungi Senyonjo, is set to walk down the aisle this weekend with her fiancé, Mbaleka Jonas.
In a recent post addressed to Nakibuuka, Nambooze said Nakibuuka has displayed actions towards her daughter’s marriage that violate the traditional culture and marriage values.
“I am writing to express concern about your recent behaviour surrounding your daughter Gloria’s engagement and upcoming marriage. While it’s natural to be excited about this new chapter in her life, your actions seem to be crossing boundaries of privacy and cultural sensitivity,”she said.
She advised Nakibuuka to stop speaking about Baby Gloria’s marriage in public through Television interviews with City Bloggers and media personalities
“As a public figure, your words and actions have an impact on your audience. However, it’s essential to respect the privacy of your daughter and her fiancé, especially during this significant period in their lives. Sharing intimate details about their relationship, marriage plans, and gifts received may be exciting for you, but it’s not necessarily appropriate for public consumption,” she said.
Nambooze said that there was no need for Nakibuuka to defend her daughter’s virginity claims in the media because there are cultural ways of doing it.
The MP believes that in addition Nakibuuka misinterpreted certain Buganda traditional marriage customs and norms.
“Moreover, your interpretation and application of Buganda culture seem inconsistent. While you initially declared that you wouldn’t respect certain cultural practices as a born-again Christian, you later erronously attached cultural significance to the goat brought by Mr. Mbaleke, to symbolize your daughter’s virginity. However, it’s worth noting that in the context of Buganda traditions, the practice of delivering a goat to signify virginity is not what you described,” Nambooze went on to say.
Speaking to the media after the event, Gloria’s mother proudly revealed that her daughter is getting married while a virgin, which is why Jonas presented a goat during the kwanjula.
Nambooze however says this interpretation is erroneous, “In our culture, the paternal aunt plays a significant role in verifying the bride’s virginity. On the morning after the couple’s first night together, the husband informs the aunt if the bride was found to be a virgin, and it’s the aunt who delivers a goat to celebrate this occasion. This is a private family matter, not a public declaration or celebration with neighbors. The goat is not a trophy to showcase, especially since the focus is on respecting the marriage and the individuals involved, regardless of the outcome,” she said.
