Muntu Faults Gov’t over Rampant Land Grabbing in Bunyoro Sub-region

Major General (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu, the presidential candidate for the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), has faulted the government for failing to end the widespread land grabbing and eviction cases in the Bunyoro Sub-region.

While addressing a campaign rally in Kikuube Town Council, Kikuube District, on Monday evening, Muntu said the discovery of oil and gas in the region has attracted tycoons and speculators who have invaded the area and illegally evicted hundreds of residents after fraudulently acquiring land titles.

He noted that to date, these tycoons continue to forcefully evict people from land they have occupied for decades, while the government remains silent. According to Muntu, the illegal evictions have forced several families in Hoima, Buliisa, and Kikuube districts to live in internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camps within their own country, without receiving any government assistance.

He blamed the government for the escalating evictions, saying some of the land grabbers are highly connected officials who use their influence to displace poor Ugandans.

“Because of the oil and gas discovery in the Bunyoro Sub-region, many tycoons have invaded the area after fraudulently acquiring land titles. They are using these titles to forcefully evict Ugandans from their ancestral land and government is doing nothing. Ugandans have become refugees in their own country. All these evictions should be blamed on the government,” said Muntu.

Muntu warned that if the land question in Bunyoro is not urgently addressed, the oil and gas discovery — which should be a blessing — could instead turn into a curse for local communities. He urged the people of Bunyoro to entrust him with their votes in the 2026 general elections, promising to ensure that all those evicted are compensated, resettled, or reinstated on their land once he assumes office.

Muntu also criticized the government for failing to equip health facilities in Bunyoro with adequate drugs and medical supplies. He noted that many patients endure long queues only to leave without receiving treatment. He urged residents to demand accountability from the government for its continued failure to deliver essential services.

The ANT presidential candidate further castigated the government for failing to curb corruption, which he said has deeply undermined service delivery in all sectors. Muntu highlighted that Uganda is currently grappling with a poor healthcare system, a struggling education sector, dilapidated roads, and unchecked corruption — challenges that, he said, reflect the urgent need for change.

Herbert Kato, the ANT parliamentary candidate for Bugahya County in Hoima District, appealed to Muntu to prioritize resolving Bunyoro’s land issues if elected president, noting that many evictees are enduring untold suffering. Jackson Tumwine, a resident of Kyarusheisha in Kyangwali Sub-county, said hundreds of people are at risk of eviction after tycoons fraudulently obtained land titles in their area. Rose Akakunda, a resident of Mandwiga in Kyangwali, appealed to Muntu to help residents secure free land titles to guarantee their ownership and security.
