A 30-year-old man has been beaten to death in Kyaterekera Sub-county, Kagadi District. The deceased has been identified as Saturday Justus, a resident of Kiyenzi Village in Kyaterekera Sub-county.
According to the Kiyenzi Village Chairperson, Ronald Nsazumuhire, the incident occurred on Wednesday morning at around 5:00AM following a bar fight reportedly triggered by a disagreement over an Oris cigarette.
Nsazumuhire said that after the quarrel, a group of people believed to be sugarcane cutters beat Saturday to death as he was trying to make his way home. The group allegedly works for Kabalesi Benon of Mabale Village in Nyakarongo Sub-county.
The Kyaterekera Sub-county LC3 Chairperson, Mr. Talemwa Fred, suggested that the conflict erupted when the late Saturday refused to share an Oris cigarette with the group members, who were reportedly drunk at the time.
Officers from Kagadi Central Police Station visited the crime scene and transported the body to Kagadi General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to relatives for burial arrangements.
The owner of the bar where the fight began has been arrested to assist police with investigations. Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, Hope Nyamugisha, the mother of the deceased, has appealed to the government to help trace and arrest the suspects, as well as support the family with burial expenses.
