A night fire at Nakanyonyi Girls Secondary School in Jinja City destroyed students’ property, including mattresses, books, and uniforms, after flames broke out in a dormitory. The incident that happened on Thursday night, fortunately, did not harm any of the students.
It is reported that the fire was first sighted by four girls who stayed back in the dormitories, as their classmates went for night preps.
The students say that the seemingly small flame was first seen in the window area, and they attempted to manage it using water for about five minutes, but it instead intensified.
They say that they had to shout for help, since the dormitory was locked from the outside. The matron in charge of the gutted dormitory reportedly rushed in, helped the girls to cover themselves with blankets to escape unharmed.
According to the press release by the school’s administration, all the students were rescued unharmed, with neither physical nor other related complications like suffocation.
The school pledged to strengthen fire safety measures and equally offer support to the students whose property was destroyed in the night fire.
“We understand the concern this may cause parents and guardians, but we want to assure you that your children are safe and well. We are also taking steps to strengthen safety measures and support the affected students,” reads the statement in part.
The statement further states that the administration alerted the police, fire brigade, and other well-wishers, who jointly worked together to manage the situation.
Meanwhile, the Kiira regional police spokesperson, James Mubi, says that their fire and rescue services team extensively documented the fire scene and interacted with the eyewitnesses.
Mubi says that their teams have yet to establish the exact cause of the fire; however, exhibits of evidential value were retrieved from the scene, and they will be subjected to forensic analysis.
