Big Eye Declares Bid for Nansana MP Seat

Renowned singer Ibrahim Mayanja, popularly known as Big Eye, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Nansana Municipality parliamentary seat in the 2026 general elections.

The “Husband Material” hitmaker made the announcement on Wednesday, sharing a campaign poster indicating that he will be vying for the seat under the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God. When my president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) speaks, it is a command. Nansana Municipality, your dedicated servant for the 2026-2031 term is here. Together we will build a stronger future,” Big Eye posted on X (formerly Twitter).

His entry into the race sets up a potential showdown with the incumbent MP, Hannington Wakayima, who was elected in 2021 on the NUP ticket and is rumored to be eyeing re-election. It remains unclear whether the party will endorse Big Eye over Wakayima or if a primary contest will determine the flag bearer.

Big Eye, 35, was previously aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and actively performed at party events during the 2011 elections.

However, he later fell out with the party, accusing it of failing to pay him Shs 270 million for his campaign performances. In 2020, he switched allegiance to NUP, citing grievances against the government, including claims of financial exploitation.

If successful, Big Eye would join the growing list of Ugandan musicians who have transitioned into politics, including MPs Hillary Kiyaga (Dr. Hilderman) and Geoffrey Lutaaya.
