Judiciary Boasts Case backlog Reduction

The ministry of justice and constitutional affairs and the judiciary says the coverage of courts across the country is now at 80%.

Judiciary has got 190 courts in its premises,70 in rented premises while 14 are in district and sub county buildings.

“we are trying to see how we can get away from renting to own our own standardized courts” says the permanent secretary of the judiciary Pius bigirimana.

“the judiciary has also embarked on building and renovating court buildings across the country and in this different courts have been completed in different districts across the country.” He added

Bigirimana was speaking at the office of the president presenting the performance of the judiciary in the NRM manifesto 2021-2026.

Bigirimana also revealed that the case backlog has reduced over the past 3 years.

In FY 2021/22 the backlog was at 30.11%, FY 2022/23 the backlog was at 27.48%, FY 2023/24 the backlog was at 26.32% and as the end of September FY 2024/25 the case backlog stands at 25.03%.

Bigirimana says they are going to push the case backlog to below 20 because cases must get out of court.

“There are a lot of complications for these cases staying in court, in commercial courts there are still a lot of cases related to banking, insurance and trade.” Stated Bigirimana.
