The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is currently conducting a nationwide enforcement operation targeting radio stations operating without licenses.
According to Ibrahim Bbosa the UCC spokesperson, despite initial warnings, 17 radio stations across Uganda, primarily in Masaka, Mubende, Greater Masaka, and Luweero, continue to broadcast illegally, wielding significant influence over their audiences.
Addressing Journalists on Monday, Bbosa revealed that cease-and-desist notices were issued to non-compliant stations in January 2024, followed by criminal summonses in July 2024. While some stations have voluntarily complied, others remain operational illegally.
“Once our enforcement actions are complete,we will issue a public notice listing the names of these non-compliant operators. ” Bbosa says.
Meanwhile,UCC has launched a nationwide operation to eliminate unlicensed megaphones, commonly known as Bizindaalo, citing disruption of public order and peace.
According to UCC spokesperson Ibrahim Bbosa, these devices are not permitted to operate by law as they are not licensed by the Commission or any other entity in Uganda for broadcasting.
Addressing Journalists at police headquarters in Nagulu today, Bbosa said UCC has already identified 20 cases for which they have received complaints and will take further action to address the issue.
“Individuals found conducting illegal broadcasts will be arrested and face severe penalties, including fines of up to UGX 30,000,000 and imprisonment for up to five years.” Bbosa adds
This enforcement drive is part of the UCC’s efforts to regulate the communications sector and ensure compliance with the law.
The UCC derives its authority from Section 5(b) of the Uganda Communications Act 2013, which empowers it to license communication services in Uganda.
