Gulu Central Police is investigating the circumstances under which a 52-year-old businesswoman in Gulu City, Claire Nambooze, took her own life in her house in Vanguard Cell, Laroo Pece Division, Gulu city.
According to a report released by Ongom David Mudong, the Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson, Nambooze was found hanged at her home on March 1, 2026. Her husband, Oola Christopher, reported the incident to Gulu Central Police Station, citing pressure from loan repayments as the likely cause.
Nambooze was a business woman who sold breakfast in the area of her residence and it is reportedly said that before she hanged herself, she had left someone to help her sell, as she went back home.It was at around 4:00pm when she was found dead.
The same report states that close relatives to Nambooze say that the deceased must have been pushed into committing suicide because of the overwhelming pressure of a loan amounting to six million shillings which she had borrowed from four different financial institutions.
The LC I chairperson of Vanguard Cell where the incident happened, Andrew Nyeko said he failed to ascertain the cause of the suicide but Nambooze’s death broke him because she was a pro-active person in the community.
A similar case of suicide, according to Nyeko had was last registered in 2003, when one Komakech took his life by hanging.
