Masaka Kids Africana to Feature on Netflix

Archewell Productions, a media company owned by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, England is set to release a documentary on Masaka Kids Africana.

The documentary named Masaka Kids a Rhythm within will feature stories of the different children within the dance group and testimonies of how dance transformed their lives.

Archewell Productions has joined Campfire Studios and Wontanara Productions to bring that story to Netflix.

The documentary will also tell the story of how independent film maker David Lopez got to know the children on the several occasions when he met and interacted with them while doing voluntary work in Uganda.

It will also be done with support of Ugandan film maker and documentary producer Moses Bwayo, who has made a name producing impactful documentaries for different Ugandan creatives including Bobi Wine.

According to media reports from the United Kingdom, Harry and Megan agreed to be partners in the production of the documentary because they are fans of the children’s dance videos and fell in love with them in 2020 during the COVID-19 lock down.

Masaka Kids Africana has become a cultural force online. Since 2018, their YouTube channel has gained more than 4.3 million subscribers and over 1.35 billion views. Their videos, filmed in rural settings, showcase intricate choreography, bright costumes, and a spirit of togetherness.

Harry and Megan also got on board with the Masaka Kids film to “help amplify their stories and help spread their love and joy even further across the globe”.

Masaka Kids Africana was founded in 2013 and raises money to support some of the 2.4 million children orphaned in Uganda as a result of extreme poverty, the HIV/Aids epidemic and years of civil conflict.

It also provides “safe shelter, food, clothing, education and medical care” to the 35 children aged two and above currently in its care, as well as funding outreach programmes to neighboring villages.
