Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale’s Lawyers have raised objections against the suspension of pre-trial rights for thier clients.
Their lawyer Elias Lukwago claims they are not allowed to meet with relatives and lawyers and are being held in a solitary confinement at Luzira prison.
Elias Lukwago maintains his clients are still presumed innocent as no court has so far found them guilty and that they should be enjoy their right to the presumption of innocence.
Lukwago complains that thier treatment by the State that also heavily guards them implies they are already convicts.
Dr. Besigye and Hajji Lutale had today returned before the Nakawa Chief magistrates court to check on the progress of police inquiries in their Treason case which the state continues to report as incompete to date.
The two have now been further remanded to Luzira prison until the 21st of May as they also await the outcome of an appeal they filed before the Highcourt challenging a decision by the Nakawa cheif magistrate to hear evidence in camera of an investigating officer who seeks to have access to Dr. Besigye and Hajji Lutale’s phone data records.
Dr. Besigye and Hajji Lutale are said to have conspired with a UPDF captain Dennis Oula to commit treasonous acts including holding meetings, giving financial support and trainings intending to overthrow the government of Uganda.
Six days ago the duo filed a second bail application. The fresh application was filed in the Criminal Division of the High Court in Kampala.
This follows the dismissal of their first application by Lady Justice Rosette Kania Comfort on April 11th 2025, on the basis that they were likely to interfere with ongoing police investigations, more so that they are charged with the gravest offence, treason.
