KCCA is seeking 108.6 billion shillings in the next financial year to deal with solid waste management in the city.
The chairperson of parliament’s committee on presidential affairs Alex Byarugaba has informed parliament’s budget committee that despite tha calamity that befell Kiteezi landfill in august last year, solid waste management continues to receive the same allocation as the previous financial years.
Byarugaba says the allocations for the next financial year only cover wages for casual workers, desilting drainages across the city and fuel for garbage trucks.
Byarugaba now wants KCCA to be allocated 108.6 billion shillings in the next financial year of which 45.6 billion shillings will be used to operationalize Buyala Landfill in Mpigi district, 14 billion shillings will be used for decommissioning of Kiteezi landfill and 8.1 billion shillings to compensate the affected persons and 48 houses erased by the waste slide.
KCCA also plans to procure new garbage trucks to improve cleanliness at 4.5 billion shillings and installation of communal skips to curb littering as per a presidential directive.
The committee has also recommended that KCCA explores the possibility of investing in sustainable waste management through recycling.
Byarugaba also wants the KCCA budget for garbage collection to be increased by 6.4 billion shillings noting that even though the authority requires 10 billion shillings only 3.6 billion shillings has been availed.
He says that money provided facilitates one running trip per day for the 37 trucks against the required two running trips per day.
