UPDF Tables Ugx 138Bn Budget for Election Season

UPDF is seeking 138.4 billion shillings to provide security during the 2026 General Election.

This is contained in the ministry of defence and veteran affairs budget frame work paper for the 2025/2026 financial year tabled before the parliamentary committee on defence and internal affairs by the ministry of defence permanent secretary rosette Byengoma.

Byengoma told the committee that they need to provide security to Members of parliament aspirants, presidential aspirants and also to make sure that the country is safe during the election period but they have not been allocated any funds to do that job.

Byegoma told members of the committee that UPDF needs to procure some logistics which they will use to protect the aspirants in the coming elections but their budget to do that has not been funded and she is appealing to parliament for provision of funds

“Here we need to protect all of you MPs during this period the required amount is 138.4bn shillings…. and this is for purposes of providing logistical and operational requirements of UPDF while securing the 2026 General Elections,” She stated.

She also informed MPs that national enterprises corporation requires 16.5 billion shillings to address research and development issues under Luwero industries but they were only allocated 9.4 billion shillings which is very little.

She noted that if national enterprises corporation is given all the money it requested for this will help to reduce on the expenditure that goes to importation of  classified equipment.

“I think you have seen their buses, armoured vehicles so that is an area that requires serious input” Byengoma remarked.
