World Vision Uganda Strengthens Community Health Systems Through Mpox Response Initiative

World Vision Uganda, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Mayuge District Local Government, is concluding the Mpox Response Project, a three-month initiative to prevent infections and strengthen the local health system. The project, which began on November 1, 2024, and ends on January 31, 2025, was funded by the National Emergency Preparedness Relief Fund (NEPREF) with a budget of $50,179.
This initiative has been implemented in the Kigandalo, Busakira, and Mpungwe sub-counties. It focuses on prevention, community engagement, and capacity building.

Key Achievements:
• 6,836 adults, 2,290 youths, and 3,814 school-aged children sensitized on Mpox prevention.
• 40 health workers, 248 Village Health Teams (VHTs), 123 teachers, 109 religious leaders, 164 youth leaders, and 212 local leaders trained in disease detection and response.
• 12 radio talk shows conducted to enhance public awareness.
• 1,762 pieces of health facility equipment, PPE, and IPC materials distributed to frontline health workers.
• Food support provided to 30 Mpox patients and psychosocial support extended to 48 affected families.
The project has also reactivated and trained three sub-county task forces in Kigandalo, Mpungwe, and Busakira to enhance disease surveillance and reporting at the community level.

Sustaining the Gains:
According to Ms Caroline Akongo, Programme Manager for the Mayuge Kaliro Cluster, the project has increased community awareness, with more cases reported for timely intervention.
“As we conclude this project, we are encouraged by the progress made. The strengthened community structures will continue to play a vital role in surveillance, early case detection, and referral for treatment. The Ministry of Health will also work with partners to ensure continued efforts in Mpox prevention and response.”
World Vision Uganda remains committed to supporting community-led health initiatives and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to enhance public health resilience.
