Two teachers’ SACCO leaders have been arraigned before Court, charged and remanded to Luzira prison on charges of defrauding members’ grants worth 2.7 billion shillings under the pretence of buying 500 Acres of land for the members whereas not .
The suspects are Mutesasira Evans Kaganizo, the Chairperson Uganda Liberal Teachers’Union SACCO and his Secretary General Esiingwa Hassan Maganda who were netted by the State House Anti-corruption unit.
The State House Anti-corruption unit stepped in after complaints emerged that the pair was misappropriating the 6.6 billion shillings that president Museveni gave to teachers to improve their well-being.
investigations unearthed a connivance between the 2 suspects who withdrew the money from the SAACO’s account in Equity Bank and on top of allegedly buying a non-existent piece of land in Kyangwali, the duo further bought a house in Kira and a Toyota Hilux at an inflated price without member’s approval .
Further investigations revealed that the contentious 500 acre piece of land belonged to Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom.
Mutesasira and Esiingwa are facing charges of obtaining money by false pretences ; an offence they committed between November and December 2024.
They denied the charges and have been remanded to Luzira prison until the 19th of March as police inquiries continue.
